Men's Lacrosse Edged by Cougars in Final Minute

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham men's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking 9-8 loss to Kean University at Robert T. Shields Field on Wednesday night.

Anthony Carpenter's goal with 36 seconds to go was the difference, as it gave the Cougars (7-3) the tightly-contested victory.

In the waning seconds, FDU-Florham (2-6) had one last-ditch effort but junior midfielder Dalton Rimmer's potential game-tying shot was thwarted by Kean goalkeeper Maxwell Fields as time expired.

Freshman attack Michael Warg led the Devils with three goals, while David Stewart added to his team-leading goal total with a pair of scores and one assist on the night.

Less than two minutes into action, Stewart broke through with the game's first goal via an unassisted strike.

At the 9:34 mark of the first quarter, Carpenter answered for the Cougars with his first of three goals and the game remained tied at one, after one.

The teams traded scores to open the second frame before Matt Speciale and Ed Adams buried two unanswered goals for the Cougars and gave Kean the 4-2 halftime edge.

Kean used a 13-9 advantage in faceoffs to gain an advantage and outshot the Devils 20-12 in the opening stanza en route to a 39-24 edge in the contest.

Just under two minutes into the third quarter, Daniel Minnich registered the highlight goal of the night. The Devils' senior attack received a pass from Stewart and promptly flung a behind the back shot, which eluded Fields and pulled the home team within one, 4-3.

After Carpenter struck again, the Devils took advantage of a man-up opportunity and Warg buried a feed from Rimmer. With 8:44 to go in the third, Matt Melnik scored his seventh goal of the season off of a pass from Minnich, which tied the game at 5-5.

With just four seconds to go in the period and the Devils trailing 6-5, Rimmer scorched a shot from the top of the circle past Fields and sent the game into the fourth deadlocked at six.

In the decisive fourth quarter, the two teams traded a pair of goals with Warg tying the game at eight with just 1:59 to play in regulation.

Following a Cougars' timeout, Carpenter took a pass from Anthony Perotta and buried a low-shot into the back of the net for the game-winning strike.

Fields made six saves in the win, while FDU-Florham netminder Conner Evans took a hard-fought loss with eight saves on the night.

Dan Decker and Nick Grasso led the charge defensively for the Devils with three caused turnovers and four ground balls apiece in the contest.

The Devils' next contest marks the beginning of MAC Freedom action as they host Delaware Valley University this Saturday, April 9 at 3 p.m.
