Men's Lacrosse Drops Conference Opener to Aggies 12-8

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham men's lacrosse team dropped its 2016 MAC Freedom opener to Delaware Valley University 12-8 on Saturday afternoon at a rain-soaked Robert T. Shields Field.

PJ Rafferty led the Aggies' (5-4, 1-0 MAC Freedom) as they took down the Devils (2-7, 0-1 MAC Freedom) in the game, which was played in cold and rainy conditions from the outset.

Rafferty scored five goals and dished out two assists to propel Delaware Valley to their second-ever MAC Freedom victory.

FDU-Florham sophomore goalkeeper Conner Evans made five stops in the loss as the Aggies narrowly edged the Devils in shot attempts, 30-29.

Raferty opened the scoring at the nine-minute mark of the first quarter before Daniel Minnich responded with his 10th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

After back-to-back goals by the Aggies, Michael Warg beat the horn for the Devils by firing home his seventh goal of the season as time expired, which resulted in a 3-2 game.

Delaware Valley notched the first score of the second quarter as both teams' defenses locked in and thwarted scoring chances.

After more than nine-scoreless minutes, Rafferty struck again to give Delaware Valley a 5-2 lead. Just eight seconds later, Conor Cunningham finished an unassisted strike for the Devils; however, Rafferty would close the first-half scoring by netting his third goal of the stanza via an isolation play.

The Devils' defensive-stalwart Dan Decker displayed some offensive prowess to open the third quarter by scoring his first goal of the season. Decker caused a turnover near midfield, scooped the ground ball and went the distance before scorching a shot past Delaware Valley's goalkeeper.

Following another scoreless run, this one lasting nearly seven minutes, Minnich hammered home an assist from Dan Sagl, which brought the Devils within one at 6-5 with 6:54 to go in the third period.

But Raftery refused to let the Devils pull even as the Aggies' freshman attack delivered again and rebuilt the Aggies lead to 7-5.

Delaware Valley added two unanswered goals before Sagl concluded the third-quarter scoring with his fifth goal of the season and FDU-Florham headed to the final quarter trailing 9-6.

An unassisted goal by Matt Melnik closed the deficit to two but the Aggies refused to relinquish their lead as they tallied two of the game's final three scores to close out the win.

The Devils were unable to pull out the victory despite a 22-17 edge in shots on goal and winning the turnover margin 19 to 24.

Delaware Valley goalkeeper Jon Fogarty did an excellent job of frustrating the Devils' attack by making 14 stops to earn the victory.

In the loss, Decker finished with a game-high eight ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers.

The Devils continue their stretch of home games when they return to action this Wednesday, April 13 against Manhattanville College at 6 p.m.
