Men's Lacrosse Tops Rangers for 2016 Madison Cup

MADISON, N.J. – David Stewart scored three goals, including the game-winner, as the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham men's lacrosse team took down cross-street rival Drew University 9-7 on Tuesday night in the 2016 edition of the Battle of Madison Avenue.

The Devils (2-5) overcame a 4-0 first-quarter deficit to top the Rangers (1-7) for the second-straight season and hold onto the Madison Cup trophy.

Four different Rangers tallied goals over the first quarter of action as the road team led 4-0 after one period of action.

Daniel Minnich broke through with the Devils first score of the contest by burying a feed from Dalton Rimmer at the 11:26 mark of the second quarter.

After Joe Palmieri struck for the Rangers, the Devils tallied the final two scores of the half as Rimmer netted his sixth of the season and Stewart finished his 10th, which resulted in 5-3 halftime lead for Drew.

The Devils outshot the Rangers 15-8 in the first half, however, the two teams each put seven shots on target during the opening stanza.

FDU-Florham continued their second-quarter momentum right into the third quarter as Rimmer and Stewart each scored to tie the game at 5-5. Stewart's goal, his second of the day, came off of a feed from Matt Melnik.

Palmieri scored with 1:49 remaining in the third to give the Rangers a slim 6-5 edge heading to the final frame.

In the fourth, the two teams traded goals before Will Kenny netted his first of the season with 9:56 to go.

Just over three minutes later, Stewart put the Devils in front for good with his team-leading 12th score of the season. Dan Sagl provided the Devils some breathing room by burying an unassisted strike with 2:07 to go and the defense locked in to secure the victory.

In total, the Devils fired 35 shots to just 18 for the Rangers and forced goalkeeper Greg Swenson to make nine saves.

Rimmer and Dan Decker led a solid defensive effort for the Devils with two caused turnovers apiece, while face-off man Liam Nelson won 10-of-14 in the circle and nabbed a game-high six ground balls.

The Devils have eight days off before their next contest when they host Kean University next Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m.
