MADISON, N.J. – Despite outscoring the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks in the second half, the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham men's lacrosse was defeated 15-7 in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.
Juniors Matt Melnik and Kevin Loveland each notched a pair of goals for the Devils (0-2) in the loss to the Ducks (3-0). Meanwhile, sophomore Conner Evans recorded 11 saves.
The Ducks wasted no time getting on the board and less than midway through the opening quarter, they had already jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Stevens added another goal in the first quarter off of an Andrew Scrutchfield score.
The hot start for the Ducks continued into the second quarter and after two quick goals from Nick Hammell, Scrutchfield came through again with two scores to complete the hat trick. Hammell recorded a hat trick as well after he scored with just over three minutes remaining in the half.
Following the Hammell score though, the Devils won the faceoff and worked their way down the field. Melnik controlled the ball and eventually ripped a shot into the back of the cage for FDU-Florham's first goal of the afternoon.
The Devils entered the second half trailing the Ducks 14-1, but the FDU-Florham offense came alive in the third quarter.
Evans sent away three shots by the Ducks and the Devils went on a 4-0 run. Melnik and Frank Salustri were responsible for the first two scores of the quarter, while Loveland tallied both of his goals right after.
Five minutes into the final quarter of play, Tom Lawson scored for the Ducks. The Devils were quick to answer though as senior attack Daniel Minnich rifled the ball into the cage on a man-up opportunity.
With less than a minute left in the game, the Devils advanced the ball down the field and sophomore midfielder Dan Sagl scored the final goal of the game.
The Devils will return to action on Sunday, March 6 for a matchup against Haverford College that is slated for 1 p.m. in Madison.
