WHITTIER, Calif. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham men's lacrosse team suffered a 13-9 setback to Whittier College in their spring break game at Memorial Field on Tuesday.

In their first-ever matchup with the Poets (3-1), the Devils (1-4) erased a 5-1 first-half lead but were unable to come away with the road victory.

Sophomore midfielder David Stewart netted three goals in the loss, while Dan Sagl notched two for FDU-Florham.

The Poets were led by Matt Symes' huge performance. Symes buried a game-high six goals in the win on 10 shot attempts.

Symes opened the scoring 2:50 into play by firing home an assist from Aaron Self.

Trailing 2-0, Stewart broke through for the Devils,  but Symes answered and the home team led 3-1 after one period of play.

The Poets registered the first two scores of the second quarter and stretched their lead to 5-1, however, the Devils swiftly erased the deficit with four unanswered goals.

Stewart netted a feed from Matt Melnik, and 59 seconds later, Sagl finished an unassisted goal.  With 4:01 remaining in the half,

Melnik scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season off of a pass from Michael Warg before Sagl knotted the game at five with his

Unfortunately, FDU-Florham was unable to contain Symes, who responded by burying two unassisted strikes in the final two minutes of the stanza for a 6-4 Whittier halftime lead.

The Poets added to their advantage by registering the first three scores of the second half, which extended their cushion to 10-5. Will Charbonneau and Dalton Rimmer tallied back-to-back scores for FDU-Florham but the Profs held off the Devils in the final quarter to secure the win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Conner Evans made a career-high 16 saves in the loss as the Poets outshot the Devils 43-27 on the night.

The Devils return to action when they host Farmingdale State University next Tuesday, March 22 at 7 p.m.
