Devils Unable to Hold Off Ospreys in Decisive Fourth Quarter

MADISON, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham men's lacrosse team was unable to hold off a huge fourth-quarter surge by Stockton University and dropped its season opener to the Ospreys 12-8 on Friday evening at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils (0-1) held a 7-6 edge entering the fourth period but were outscored 6-1 by the Ospreys (1-0) in the decisive final frame.

Senior attack Daniel Minnich led the way for the Devils with two goals and three assists, while junior midfielder and the team's primary faceoff man Dalton Rimmer, chipped in with two goals, one assists and seven ground balls in the loss.

Mike Caposella paced the Ospreys with a game-high four goals and Zack Aho added three on the night.

The two teams traded scores over the first period with Stockton striking first at the 12:53 mark before Frank Salustri answered with 9:33 to go in the opening period.  Minnich got on the board with his first of the day at the 1:25 mark, which tied the contest at 2-2.

In the second quarter, the teams again each scored twice as Matt Melnik struck off of a Minnich assist at the 9:26 mark before the Ospreys briefly pulled ahead 4-3 on a score by Chris Kaczamarski.

Just 17 ticks shy of intermission, FDU-Florham freshman attack Will Charbonneau netted his first collegiate goal by scooping up a rebound and quickly firing it into the back of the net for the equalizer.

Minnich and Rimmer each tallied the first goals of the second stanza and the Devils went on to outscore the Ospreys 3-2 over the third quarter. But the fourth quarter belonged to the Ospreys.

Through three quarters of action, the field was balanced with each team earning equal opportunities but Stockton turned up the heat in the fourth by outshooting the Devils 22-9.

The road Ospreys netted the first three scores of the final period, two coming from Aho's stick, resulting in a 9-7 Stockton lead.

Michael Warg answered by taking a great feed from Rimmer and firing past Stockton goalkeeper Pat Quinn. However, Stockton closed out the game with three straight strikes, the final two both coming with a man advantage.

The Devils defense did a solid job of pressuring the Ospreys throughout the contest and forced 26 turnovers compared to 21 by Stockton. Junior standout Dan Decker was responsible for four caused turnovers and corralled three ground balls on the night.

In the win, Quinn made 14 stops for Stockton, while sophomore netminder Conner Evans tallied 13 saves in the loss for FDU-Florham.

FDU-Florham returns to action this Wednesday, March 2 when they host Stevens Institute of Technology at 4 p.m.
