MADISON, N.J. - The Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham women's basketball team's senior leader led the Devils past Wilkes University on senior night, winning by a score of 69-54 on Tuesday evening.
Â
Senior forward Shalette Brown tallied her twentieth double-double of the season with 18 points and 21 rebounds, putting her first in the country in the category.
Â
"[Senior night] was very special. I told everybody it's not just senior night, it's everybody night. Let's get this win so we can have one more game and get to the playoffs," Brown said.
Â
It was the Colonels, however, that came out firing. Halfway through the first quarter, Wilkes led 10-5 and shot 67 percent from the field.
Â
Rebounding would provide the spark that the Devils needed. At the end of one, FDU-Florham had out rebounded Wilkes 10-5 and that margin doubled by halftime. Nine of the 22 rebounds in the first half came on the offensive glass, making up for the team's shooting woes.
Â
The Devils also relied heavily on the three-point ball in the first half, making five of nine field goals from behind the arc. Junior guard Alyssa McDonough scored all 12 of her first half points from long range.
Â
According to head coach Marc Mitchell, the team looked to capitalize on whatever looks Wilkes gave them and three-pointers happened to be that.
Â
To start the second half, Mitchell changed plans. FDU-Florham scored seven of their first eight baskets inside the three-point line. This was a part of a 13-0 run that expanded the Devils' lead to 20.
Â
"We were trying to make sure that we make a concerted effort to look inside and get the ball inside. We just play better when we work inside-out," Mitchell said.
Â
Wilkes countered with its own run, ending the third quarter on an 8-0 spurt and extending it to a 19-6 run midway through the fourth. The Devils clamped down late and never let the lead to dwindle to single digits.
Â
The Devils are off to Doylestown, Pa. for their final regular season contest as they take on Delaware Valley University on Saturday, February 20..
