MADISON, N.J. (December 6, 2016) -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's basketball team never trailed as they defeated local rival Drew University, 72-64, in an exciting battle of Madison Ave in the Ferguson Recreation Center on Tuesday night.
The Devils improved to 3-3 on the season as the Rangers dropped to 2-4.
A three-pointer from sophomore guard
Anthony Mitchell opened up the scoring just 37 seconds in, setting the tone of FDU's strong first half. The Devils recorded a 43.2 shooting percentage compared to Drew's 20.7 percent in the first alongside a 32-17 rebound advantage.
Junior guard
Veon Lassiter was a dominant force on the court, notching a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lassiter also made four blocks and went 6-of-9Â on the field.Â
The second half took off with a block and a rebound from senior
Donte Ali that led Mitchell in for a fastbreak in the paint to put the Devils up, 37-19.Â
With 13:45 left in the contest and the Rangers pushing, it was Ali again who swung the momentum back in favor of the Devils with a thrilling steal and dunk that made the crowd roar.
Junior guard
Steve Herdman played a key role in ensuring the victory, adding 20 points and nine rebounds. Herdman went 8-of-8 from the charity stripe and added four assists.
The Devils finished the night with a 55-40 rebound advantage including 17 on the offensive glass in the night.Â
FDU is back in action when they take on Centenary College on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. in Hackettstown, N.J.
