Centenary Tops Men's Basketball in Overtime

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (December 10, 2016) - The FDU men's basketball team fell in overtime to in-state rival Centenary 88-85 Saturday.

Sophomore Anthony Mitchell had 26 points and six assists for FDU, who fell to 3-4 on the season. The Devils will be back in action on December 29th, taking on Randolph Macon.

Over the first six minutes, neither side was able to go ahead by more than four points. A trey by Mitchell brought FDU to within one at 12-11, but Centenary scored with a 12-0 run that spanned nearly four minutes midway through the first.

The Devils responded with a 15-2 spurt of their own to grab a two point lead, capped off with a free throw from freshman Timar Brown. FDU limited the hosts to one field goal and three points over the final 4:11 of the first.

Jake Logue of the Cyclones hit a layup with 8:41 left in the second to give the Cyclones their biggest lead of the second stanza, going up 10. Mitchell canned a trey with 1:13 to put the Devils down four, but Kyle Smith hit two free throws to bring the gap back to six. FDU got a layup from junior Veon Lassiter and a turnover which turned into a Donte Ali layup. Down two, FDU got missed a free throw and Mitchell earned a foul, hitting both at the line to force overtime.

Centenary scored five of the opening seven tallies of overtime, yet back to back layups by sophomore Darren Davy sliced the lead to a point with 1:35 left. FDU could get no closer than two the rest of the way, and a chance to force double overtime, but Logue forced a turnover at the buzzer to eliminate the comeback.

Ali had 21 points and 12 rebounds. whiile Davy missed a double-double by one point settling for nine points and 10 boards.
