WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 30, 2016) – Freshman
Kendrea Williams recorded her fifth 20-point performance of the season to help the FDU women's basketball team to its seventh straight win with a 67-60 triumph over Catholic Friday.
Both the Devils and Cardinals are now 9-2 with the result, as the Devils went 2-0 in the Jaime Lynn Roberts DC Holiday Classic this week.
Willams led all scorers with 25 points, including a career high seven treys from behind the arc. Senior
Rachel Groom picked up her fourth double-double of the season, including her second in as many days, going for 22 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman
Taiah Thornton narrowly missed a double-double of her own, putting up nine points and eight assists.
The game didn't get off to the start FDU wanted, as the team fell behind 18-2 after the first frame thanks to a 16-0 run. The Devils were held scoreless for the final 6:14 of the period, before countering with a 6-0 spurt to open the second. Senior
Alyssa McDonough scored four straight markers bringing the deficit to single digits, but Catholic scored the final four points to establish a 12-point halftime edge.
The Devils seemingly flipped a switch in the third quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 19-6 in the frame, taking the lead with 1:08 left in the stanza thanks to a trey from Williams. The fourth quarter saw the score tied five times over the first 6:16 before Williams buried one from three to put FDU up for good. Sophomore
Raven Dowling put the game away with a pair from the charity stripe with two seconds left to end the scoring.
When asked what the difference was between halves, Head Coach
Marc Mitchell had one word to describe the way the team played, "Relentless." The team forced 17 turnovers over the final 20 minutes of play.
The Devils ring in 2017 with the MAC Freedom road opener against Wilkes on January 4.
