Field hockey drops Conference Championship in Double-Overtime

MADISON, N.J. -- The top-seeded FDU-Florham field hockey team was upset by No. 2 seeded King's College (Pa.) in a hard-fought 1-0 double-overtime decision in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship title game.

With both teams scoreless in double-overtime, Monarchs junior defender Haley Tomaszewski was in the perfect spot to nail in a shot from the left side off a feed from Anna Morgan for the golden goal in the 92nd minute of the play.

The Devils defense of seniors Erin O'Connell and Alicia Theoret alongside junior Lauren Brannan and sophomore Makayla Pak played outstanding in halting the Monarchs' offense and blocking shots throughout the contest.

On the attack, FDU-Florham was led by five shots from senior forward Kim Davis and four off the stick of sophomore midfielder Brooke Sherwin. Still, the Monarchs highlighted an air-tight defense paired with six saves from goalie Paige Tedik.

With just under 13 minutes left in regulation time, the Devils had a solid opportunity when O'Connell made a great feed to freshman midfielder Jessica Pietracatella who hit the ball just wide of the net.

The Devils had another close chance in the first overtime period when they were awarded a penalty stroke, but a huge save from Tedik kept the game scoreless.

Pak and O'Connell were dominant forces on the back line, consistently sprinting back to win the ball from the opposing attack, while providing offensive opportunities for the Devils.

In the last minute of regulation time, Pak made a great play in the Devil's zone, catching up to a King's forward on a breakaway and stealing the ball to prevent the shot.

The Devils outshot King's 15-8 and had a 13-8 penalty corner advantage but struggled to break through.

In net for FDU-Florham sophomore Samantha Rubin had another solid outing with two saves a couple of vital clears in the defeat.

The Devils will now await to hear about more post-season opportunities.
