Devils advance to Conference Championships

FDU-Florham defeated Wilkes, 4-0, in the semifinal match

MADISON, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham field hockey advanced to the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship game after defeating Wilkes University, 4-0, on Wednesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils (14-6) will face King's College on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field for the title.

FDU-Florham was led by MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Year Kim Davis with a pair of goals and an assist in the victory. MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Year Erin O'Connell tallied the game-winner while senior midfielder Noelle Shirey grabbed the final mark.

O'Connell struck first with a blast into the Wilkes net off an assist from senior forward Davis at 11:16. That proved to be all the Devils needed to keep their playoff dreams alive.

With less than a minute to go before half time, Wilkes' Marissa Surdy had a breakaway opportunity, but was deterred by a clutch defensive save from junior defender Lauren Brannan.

The Devils out shot the Lady Colonels 17-7 in the night but the game remained tight until Davis fired in a shot from the top of the circle at the 65th minute.

The Long Branch native then followed up by capitalizing on a penalty stroke opportunity to put the Devils up, 3-0.

Brannan and sophomore defender Makayla Pak played a standout game in the back for the Devils, blocking several shots to ensure the shutout for sophomore goalie Samantha Rubin.

Shirey had the final say of the night with a beautiful goal from the left side off a rebound with just three seconds remaining on the clock to cap off the win at 4-0.
