Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss

POMONA, N.J. (November 19, 2016) - Senior Rachel Groom scored 23 points, but the FDU-Florham women's basketball team fell to Stockton 74-71 in the Stockton Tip-Off Tournament Championship game Saturday.

FDU evens its record at 1-1, while Stockton moves to 3-0. Groom was the lone member of the Devils selected to the All-Tournament team.

The Devils fell behind 5-0 early, but took the lead on back-to-back threes from freshmen Taiah Thornton and Kendrea Williams. With Stockton up seven as the first quarter wound down, the Devils scored the next 12 markers to head into the second up three. Neither team was able to separate in the second 10 minutes, with Stockton taking a six point lead into the break.

FDU out-scored the Ospreys by three in the third quarter, closing with five of the final seven points of stanza, highlighted by a three form freshman Jennah Roman. Thornton opened the fourth with a trey from behind on the arc, but the host Ospreys quickly tallied the next eight points.

Trailing by eight with 4:01 left, FDU went on a 10-0 spurt, aa Thornton and Groom combined for all 10. The Ospreys Lea Mendolla hit a jumper with 1:26 left to put them up two, but Groom converted a free throw to cut the gap in half. Stockton was able to force a turnover and hit a pair of free throws to propel forward by three. The Devils had one final look, but a three-pointer to tie at the buzzer did not fall.

Stockton held a 44-31 edge on the glass, but FDU forced 29 turnovers. Groom collected six boards, as Thornton had 15 points and four steals. All five starters were in double-figures for the Devils.

FDU will host Centenary on Monday at 7 p.m. in the home-opener.
