Women's Basketball Wins in Season Opener

GALLOWAY, N.J. (November 18, 2016) - Freshman Taiah Thornton narrowly missed a triple-double in her collegiate debut as the FDU-Florham women's basketball team topped Gettysburg 91-76.

The Devils advance to the Championship game of the Stockton Tip-Off Tournament tomorrow, taking on either Stockton or Western Connecticut at 3 p.m.

FDU never trailed in the contest, but a free by the Bullets Emily Dorshimer cut the Devils lead to three with 3:45 left in the first period, but 13 of the next 21 points were in favor of the Devils to close out the first quarter up seven. Sophomore Mariah Martinez knocked down a layup off a steal from classmate Kayla Croswell to push the FDU lead to double-digits halfway through the second quarter. Gettysburg would close the frame out on a 6-0 run, heading into break with a four point deficit.

Thornton was the catalyst in the opening half, scoring a game-high 16 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. FDU scored eight straight to open the third, the rally capped off with a pair from charity stripe thanks to Croswell. The Bullets were unable to get any closer than seven after a jumper by Emily Gibbons with 5:06 left. FDU scored the next 10 markers, with senior Alyssa Mcdonough chipping in five during the decisive rally.

Thornton led the team with 27 points, eight assists and nine rebounds, while Mcdonough had 20 and five boards. Classmate Rachel Groom hauled in five rebounds to go along with 16 points. The team was aided by 47.37% shooting in the second half, and scored 32 points off 33 Bullet turnovers.
