Field Hockey Earns Top Seed In MAC Freedom Tournament

MADISON, N.J. (October 27, 2016) - The FDU-Florham field hockey team claimed the top spot in next weeks Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament with a 2-1 win over Manhattanville Thursday.

FDU moved to 13-6, 6-1 in the MAC Freedom, while M-ville dropped to 11-6, 4-3 in conference.

The Devils drew first blood just 5:15 into the game. Off a corner from senior Kim Davis, the ball rolled around before sophomore Chrissy Penney lofted a shot over the keeper to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Davis had a chance to double lead at 15:24, but a Davis attempt was stopped by the goalie.

FDU once again capitalized off a scrum in front in the 27th minute, as freshman Maggie Sohns blasted a pass from freshman Marie Pietracatella into the net for her second tally of the year. The Valiants had their best of the evening with 27 minutes left, as a shot from just inside the circle was saved by sophomore Samantha Rubin.

Manhattanville had opportunity with two minutes to go, but a hard shot sailed just wide. The Valiants finally broke through with 11 seconds remaining in the game, as Nikki Fanelle converted a penalty stroke.

Davis led the way with five shots, including three on goal.

Prior to the game, the Devils honored Davis, Cassidy Egan, Alicia Theoret, Erin O'Connell and Noelle Shirey as part of Senior Night.

Dates and times for the MAC Freedom Tournament will be announced tomorrow.
