MONTCLAIR, N.J. (October 25, 2016) - The FDU-Florham field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 17 Montclair State Wednesday.
FDU dropped to 12-6 while Montclair improved to 14-4.
The Devils had three straight penalty corners to open the contest, converting the third opportunity. Sophomore
Brooke Sherwin ripped a shot that classmate
Chrissy Penney deflected in for her eighth tally of the year. Montclair answered with four penalty corners of their own, but MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week
Samantha Rubin made a pair of the stops early on to keep the one goal edge.
Rubin had an active first half, seeing seven shots and making five saves in the opening 15 minutes of play. The Red Hawks had a golden chance to score off a corner, but senior
Erin O'Connell held the back line with a defensive save. Rubin finished the opening 35 minutes with nine saves. Montclair evened the contest up at one at the 51:04, as Danielle Butrico scored an unassisted goal. Eight minutes later, Butrico tallied her second of the game to put the hosts up 2-1.
FDU fought back, receiving a pair of penalty corners and a shot by O'Connell that was saved by the goalkeeper. A foul inside the circle gave the Devils a penalty stroke, but the attempt was stopped by the stick of a diving keeper, protecting the one goal lead. The Devils had one final chance to equalize, but a shot by freshman
Maggie Sohns went wide off a corner attempt.
O'Connell led the team with a pair of shots, while Rubin made 15 stops in goal. The 15 saves were two off of the sophomore's season-high. Montclair held a 24-6 edge in shots, and a 20-8 advantage on penalty corners.
The Devils will be back in action Thursday for Senior Night against Manhattanville at 7 p.m. at Robert T. Shields field.
