HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham volleyball team went 1-3 at the Stevens Invitational this weekend, defeating Montclair State University and falling to Stevens, Springfield College and Haverford College.
FDU 0, Stevens 3 (12-25, 13-25, 9-25)
The Devils struggled to match Stevens' aggressive attack that recorded 41 kills to the Devils' 19. The Ducks also came up strong defensively, grabbing 11 blocks to keep the Devils out of reach.
Sophomore
Lauren Harris, junior
Melissa Gaffney and freshman
Emily Smith combined for 11 total kills while junior
Rachel Catena made 15 digs and classmate
Courtney Conte had nine assists in the setback.
FDU 3, MSU 0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-17)
While FDU-Florham and MSU matched up pretty evenly in stat comparisons, the Devils managed to come through will a full sweep over RedHawks.
Harris had 10 kills, Gaffney made nine and sophomore
Kate Quinlan grabbed eight. The trio also combined for a total of seven blocks in the triumph.
Conte recorded 32 assists and seven digs while Catena grabbed 14 digs while sophmore
Nikole Meluso added nine to complete the sweep.
FDU 0, Springfield 3 (15-25, 17-25, 19-25)
The Devils fought hard and matched up well against Springfield, but were unable to come out on top.
Catena was a force to be reckoned with making 20 digs while Conte contributed 28 assists. Gaffney led the Devils with nine kills while Harris and Quinlan followed with six each in the defeat.
FDU 1, HC 3 (27-29, 25-22, 21-25, 15-25)
Despite dropping the first set in a close, 29-27, contest, the Devils fought back to win the second set, 25-22 and tie up the match.
Still, Haverford's Valentine Courouble came up with a big performance of 21 kills, ultimately leading the Fords to a victory.
The Devils showcased great talent despite the loss as Harris and Gaffney both recorded a double-double. Harris totaled 14 kills and 28 digs while Gaffney grabbed 11 kills and 21 digs. Quinlan contributed 12 kills and one block.
Catena once again stunned with 37 digs as Conte made 43 assists in the effort and freshman
Nathalia Padron added four kills.
Up next, the Devils return to conference action against Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa. on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
