Devils notch 100th program win in dramatic final minutes vs. Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- For  the second year in a row, the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham football team defeated Middle Atlantic Conference rival Wilkes University on Saturday, Oct. 1 with an exciting 32-28 triumph.

The victory was FDU-Florham's 100th football win in school history and first for the season. It was also the first time in program history that FDU-Florham defeated Wilkes University on the road.

The Devils are now 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the MAC Freedom.

With Wilkes University leading by two points late in the fourth quarter, sophomore quarterback Jagger Green connected a 21-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Michael Panzarino for the winning touchdown in the final minutes, spoiling the Colonel's homecoming rally.

Green had a commanding performance as he completed 32 of 48 passes and threw for a career-high 361 yards and four touchdowns.

Sophomore linebacker Isaiah Turner dominated on defense, finishing with 19 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for the loss and senior wide receiver Esaun Mobley hauled in nine catches for 145 yards and made three touchdowns in the contest. Turner's 19 tackles tied Mike Mancino '13 for the school record of most tackles in a single game.

FDU-Florham's first scoring play was sparked by a nine-yard rush from sophomore running back Robert Young. Green then hit Mobley for a connection of 27 yards to get the Devils' first down. At third and 10, Green connected with Mobley again in the Colonels' endzone to put FDU-Florham up, 6-0. 

The Devils carried the momentum to the final minutes of the 1st quarter, taking advanatage of a drive opporunity from the Wilkes 10-yard line. 

Green found junior running back Jonathan Grant for nine yards before taking the ball himself in the Colonel's endzone to scores the Devils' second touchdown of the afternoon. Freshman kicker Nick Maciejewski's kick attempt was good to give FDU-Florham a 13-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Devils remained hot at the start of the second quarter. As Green hauled a 31-yard pass to Mobley for the first down. Mobley scored one play later on a four-yard catch

With FDU-Florham leading 19-0, Wilkes stepped in with an eight play, 80-yard drive for their first touchdown of the night. Tight end Garrett Armstrong was on the receiving end of quarterback Ryan Dailey's 24-yard pass to score.

The Colonels continued their comeback by closing out the second half with another touchdown from Jeff Steeber on a six-yard catch from Dailey to cut FDU-Florham's lead, 19-14.

The Mobley-Green chemistry pulled the Devils further ahead, as the wide receiver collected a 37-yard pass from Green in the Wilkes' end zone.

From there, Wilkes answered back with two touchdowns to take grab a 28-26 lead late in the third quarter.

But the Devils fought back in the fourth quarter until finally grabbing the dramatic triumph on Panzarino's touchdown with three seconds left on the clock.

FDU-Florham's rushing game was led by Young who gained 61 yards in the contest. Panzarino receieved eight passes for 132 yards while freshman tight end John Pellegrini added five for 47 yards and freshman offensive lineman Michael Sullivan added two sacks on the defense.

The Devils return to conference action against Lycoming College on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. at Robert T. Shields Field.
