Devils Rally Past No. 20 Profs In Overtime Victory

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham field hockey team earned a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over No. 20 Rowan University on Thursday night at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils (2-0), overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to knock off the nationally-ranked Profs (0-1) in dramatic fashion.

Senior Alicia Grotyohann delivered the heroics by burying a flawless feed from junior forward Kim Davis 5:06 into the first overtime period for the game-winner.

Both teams appeared to be in mid-season form and played sound field hockey at both ends of the field. The Profs outshot the Devils 8-3 in the opening stanza and it paid off in the 14th minute when Sam Browne finished a setup from teammate Abbie Tucker resulting in the game's first score.

Throughout the first half, the Profs had several key scoring chances but were continuously turned away by Devils goalkeeper Amy Defnet and the strong backline play of Erin O'Connell and Nicole Hall. Defnet finished with 11 saves, the second most of the senior's career.

Despite an 11-3 disadvantage in shot attempts and losing the penalty corner battle 8-1, the Devils maintained their composure and entered the break within one score.

In the second half, the Devils turned up the offense. Over the first two minutes, freshman Brooke Sherwin fired twice and senior Stephanie Geskes sent a rocket wide, while the Devils earned two penalty corners.

A Rowan defender kept the Devils off the board by making a crucial defensive save to rob Davis of the equalizer. However, just over 12 minutes into the half, the Devils' offensive prowess earned them a momentum-swinging penalty stroke, which Davis promptly scorched into the back of the cage to tie the game at 1-1.

Later in the half, Davis earned another penalty stroke but Rowan goalkeeper Carly DeMarco forced it wide and kept the contest deadlocked.

After several close calls for both teams, the game proceeded to overtime, which set the stage for Grotyohann's winner. The senior, who struck twice in the Devils' season opener on Tuesday, delivered in the clutch again tonight. Davis eluded the Profs' defense and approached the cage from the left side before swiftly sending a perfect pass to Grotyohann, who knocked home the game-clinching strike.

The duo has now combined for six goals in the Devils' two games this season.

FDU-Florham will look to continue the momentum in their next outing this Saturday, September 5 when they host Union College at 2 p.m.
