Field Hockey Trumps Dutchwomen 2-1 in Non-Conference Affair

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham field hockey team closed out their three game home stretch with a 2-1 victory over the Union College Dutchwomen on Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.

Just over two minutes into action, the Dutchwomen (1-1) were awarded two consecutive corners. On the second attempt, Hannah Madden sent the ball into the circle and as the ball made its way near the cage, Alexa Steriti got a hold of it and shot it in for the score.

After falling behind early in the contest, the Devils (3-0) went on the prowl and worked hard to keep the Dutchwomen's defense on the edge. However, shot after shot, they kept coming up just short.

It was not until the 10 minute mark that the Devils finally broke through the Dutchwomen's defense. Sophomore Gabby Allen took a shot at the net but it was saved by Union's goalie, Laura Aptowitz. The ball then trickled off of Aptowitz back in front of the cage and Chrissy Penney fired the shot in for her first collegiate goal.

With the score evened up at 1-1, the Devils went right back to work and in the 18th minute, junior Kim Davis rifled a corner to the top of the circle to Erin O'Connell. The junior defender took aim at her target and ripped the shot past Aptowitz to put the Devils up by one.

The Devils began the second half with nine penalty corners and five shots, but they struggled to find the back of the cage. Aptowitz was a force in goal for the Dutchwomen, racking up 15 saves on the afternoon.

Despite not scoring in the second half, the Devils still managed to hold onto their lead and keep constant pressure on the Dutchwomen. FDU-Florham outshot Union College 24-4 in the contest in route to the 2-1 win.

The Devils will head on the road for the first time in the 2015 season. They will be pinned up against the defending national champions, the No. 4-ranked TCNJ Lions on Tuesday, September 8 at 7:30 p.m.
