CHESTER, Pa. --
Andrew Ruane's goal in the 41st minute was the difference as the FDU-Florham men's soccer team topped Widener University 1-0 at Leslie C. Quick Stadium on Saturday night.
The Devils (4-4-1) played 90 minutes of outstanding defense to come away with their second shutout victory of the season. The Pride (4-4-1), rallied to outshoot the Devils 8-3 in the second half after losing the first half shot battle 7-3 but FDU-Florham's backline minimized those shots, which resulted in just two on-target attempts.
Senior goalkeeper
Nick Mihalik made two saves, both in the second stanza, to earn the victory, whileÂ
Jonathan Rouse also made two stops in the contest.
After both teams struggled for quality opportunities for most of the first half, Ruane broke through when he captured a loose ball in the box and immediately fired it past Rouse for the game-deciding score. Ruane's strike was his fifth of the season, which ties him with
AJ Carnevale for the team lead.
Despite being outshot in the second half, the Devils fended off the Pride and maintained their one-goal lead through the final whistle.
FDU-Florham opens up MAC Freedom play when they take on Wilkes University next Saturday, October 3 at 7 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
