DALLAS, Pa. – In a rematch of last year's MAC Freedom Tournament Championship Game, the FDU-Florham field hockey team once again came out on top after they defeated the Misericordia University Cougars 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in Dallas, Pa.
With four goals in her last two games, junior forward Kim Davis continued her hot start to the season and added two more scores in Saturday's contest to bring her season total to a team-high 11.
Just over a minute into action, the Devils (6-3, 1-0 MAC Freedom) were on the attack and freshman Brooke Sherwin sent a shot into the back of the cage off of an assist from Alicia Grotyohann.
Several minutes later, Sherwin once again had the ball but this time elected to pass it off to senior midfielder Stephanie Geskes, who rifled the shot past the Cougars' (2-6, 0-1 MAC Freedom) goalkeeper, Angela Pasquini.
The Devils entered Saturday's contest allowing just one shot by the opposition in their previous two games combined. However, they let up their first goal in over a week to Misericordia's leading scorer, Lindsay Hischak in the 18th minute of play.
As the halftime horn was seconds away from sounding off, Davis sent a shot at the cage but it was saved by Pasquini and the Devils led by just one goal entering the second half of play.
Looking to add to the lead, Davis got another crack at Pasquini and capitalized in the 44th minute when Sherwin fed her the ball near the cage for the score.
The Devils added another goal off of the stick of Davis in the 47th minute to take a 4-1 lead.
Just over midway through the second half, Hischak notched her second goal of the game off of an assist from Colby Eldridge.
The Cougars sent a few more shots at the Devils' cage before time expired, but FDU-Florham goalkeeper Amy Defnet held her ground and picked up a couple of saves to help seal the 4-2 victory.
The Devils will travel to Mahwah, N.J. for their next game on Tuesday, September 29 for a non-conference showdown with the Ramapo College Roadrunners. The match is set to start at 4 p.m.
