Devils Edge out Rangers 1-0 in Battle of Madison Ave.

MADISON, N.J. - The FDU-Florham field hockey team closed out a three-game home stand with a 1-0 victory over cross-street rivals, Drew University, in the Battle of Madison Avenue on Wednesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils (5-3) defense put on a masterful performance, not allowing a single shot by the Rangers all night. Nicole Hall, Erin O'Connell and Makayla Pak worked brilliantly together, warding off any Drew (1-5) player that made her way past midfield.

Despite outshooting the Rangers 32-0 in the contest, the Devils struggled to find the back of the cage. In the first 15 minutes of action, FDU-Florham took 10 total shots, but came up empty on each attempt.

It was not until the 17th minute, that junior forward Kim Davis got the ball at the top of the circle and ripped it into the back of the cage to put FDU-Florham up 1-0.

A large part of the Rangers success at limiting the Devils' scoring was Drew defender Michele Pozyc, who tallied four defensive saves in the game. Pozyc placed her name atop of the Landmark Conference Career Defensive Saves list with her performance on the night.

Each time the Devils seemed to have the advantage on the offensive end, Pozyc was there behind the goalkeeper to send away the shot.

The Devils controlled the ball and managed to keep it on the Rangers' side of the field for majority of the game and earned a total of 23 penalty corners in the contest.

FDU-Florham worked hard to add to their lead, but the early goal by Davis turned out to be enough as they were victors in the Battle of Madison Ave for the second consecutive year.

The Devils will head on the road to Dallas, Pa. for their next match and kickoff MAC Freedom play with a 1 p.m. showdown against the Misericordia Cougars on Saturday, September 26.
