MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham field hockey team snapped a three-game skid and shutout the Moravian College Greyhounds 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.
The Devils (4-3) were led by junior forward Kim Davis, who recorded a hat trick to bring her season goal total to eight.
FDU-Florham came out hot and dominated possession of the ball. Able to keep the ball on the Moravian (4-2) side of the field, the Devils took seven shots within the first five minutes of the contest. However, all of the shots were turned away by the Greyhounds' goalie, Megan Kanyuk, who recorded 13 saves in the game.
In the sixth minute, the Devils offense capitalized on a scoring opportunity once Davis fired a shot past Kanyuk to put FDU-Florham up 1-0.
On the following possession, the Devils found themselves near the Moravian cage and it was Davis who took a shot from the edge of the circle and scored her second goal of the afternoon.
With the Greyhounds struggling to get past midfield, FDU-Florham took the ball and worked their way into the circle and freshman Brooke Sherwin got a hold of the ball and rifled a thunderous shot into the back of the cage from the left side.
At the half, the Devils were leading 3-0 and the defense, led by Nicole Hall, Erin O'Connell and freshman Makayla Pak, did not allow the Greyhounds to attempt a single shot.
To open up the second half of play, the Devils earned four penalty corners, but were unable to capitalize on any scoring chances. However, the Devils got another penalty corner and freshman Chrissy Penney got a stick on the ball as it entered the circle. Penney was able to send it in the direction of Davis, who then scored to complete the hat trick.
The Devils tacked on one more goal late in the contest on a shot from the left side off of the stick of sophomore Marissa Kowalskie.
The Greyhounds were outshot 20-1 in the contest and FDU-Florham led in penalty corners 13-6.
The Devils will be back in action on Wednesday, September 23 when they square off with Drew University in the Battle of Madison Ave. at 7 p.m.
