Devils Play 18th-ranked Lions to 2-2 Draw

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham men's soccer team played No. 18 The College of New Jersey to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday afternoon at the Devils Grass Field.

The Devils (2-3-1) came back from one-goal down in the second half to pull even before the two teams went on to play two overtime periods of scoreless soccer.

FDU-Florham notched the first goal of the contest at the 36:50 mark when George Batista sent a corner kick into the box and Andrew Ruane out-jumped a swarm of defenders to head the ball into the back of the net. The finish was Ruane's third of the campaign.

The one-goal lead held up through the first half of play, thanks to some stellar work by the Devils' backline. Senior back Stephen Cocuzza led the charge for the team's defense and did an excellent job to thwart several Lions' (5-0-2) scoring chances.

TCNJ outshot FDU-Florham 9-3 over the first 45 minutes of action but the strong play of the defense and junior goalkeeper Frank Maggiore helped preserve the first-half lead.

Maggiore faced his toughest test of the first half following a Devils' turnover, which resulted in a golden scoring opportunity for TCNJ's Thomas Hogue. But the Devils netminder smothered Hogue's shot from point-blank range to keep the Lions off of the board.

TCNJ pulled even early in the second half when Nick Sample sent a rocket from the top left corner of the box to the opposite side of the net. Then, in the 58th minute, Peter Dresch temporarily put the Lions ahead when he received a quality setup from Sample and buried it past Maggiore Jr.

The Lions' lead proved to be short-lived as less than a minute later Jose Guardado grabbed a feed from AJ Carnevale and quickly turned and fired the equalizer from five-yards out. Despite several close calls, neither team was able to score over the final 50 minutes of play.

Maggiore Jr. finished with 12 saves, while TCNJ's Jake Nesteruk made two stops in the contest.

The Devils will take on Berkeley College (N.J.) in their next contest, which is this Saturday, September 19 at 5 p.m.
