PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Despite outshooting the Stevenson University Mustangs 27-11, the FDU-Florham men's soccer team was unable to come out with the victory and ultimately fell 4-2 in the Gary Smith Invitational in Patchogue, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils (2-2) were led by a two-goal game from junior AJ Carnevale.
Eight minutes into action, FDU-Florham was awarded a penalty kick and Andrew Ruane booted the ball towards the net, but it was saved by Mustangs' (2-3) goalie, Ryan Callinan. The Mustangs' keeper totaled nine saves on the afternoon.
Callinan went on to make another save on a Ruane shot off of a corner kick, but after the ball went loose in the box, Carnevale stepped up and buried the shot for the score.
Minutes after the Carnevale score, the Mustangs got possession of the ball and Logan McCarron fired it into the net from long range off of an assist from Reid Hawkins.
FDU-Florham continued to rip shots at the Mustangs' net but kept coming up short. Meanwhile, in the 28th minute, Stevenson took a corner and Scott Dorman got the ball from Illiyas Mirza and scored.
The Mustangs went on to add one more goal in the first half off of the foot of Mirza to take a 3-1 lead.
To kick off the second half, Carnevale sent a shot at the net but Callinan made the save. Following another save by the Mustangs' goalie, the Devils were awarded a corner kick. George Batista went to take the kick and sent the ball into the box. As the ball rolled into the box, Carnevale ripped the shot to the top of the net for his second goal of the game to cut the deficit to one.
Over the course of the next 20 minutes, the Devils took six shots, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Late in the second half, the Devils committed a costly foul that led to a Mustangs' penalty kick. Hawkins took the kick and capitalized to help seal Stevenson the 4-2 victory.
