MADISON, N.J. – After 112 minutes of scoreless soccer, junior captain
Sebastian Gallo emphatically buried the game-winning goal and gave the FDU-Florham men's soccer team a 1-0, season-opening victory over Berkeley College (N.Y.) on Tuesday afternoon.
The game remained scoreless through regulation and one extra-time period before Gallo provided the heroics. Despite outshooting the Knights (0-1) 26-3 in the contest, the Devils (1-0) were unable to find the back of the net until the game's waning minutes.
Early on, it appeared that the Devils were in line for a big afternoon. But several quality scoring chances went awry as the home team failed to convert nine shots in the opening half.
In the second half, Berkeley goalkeeper
Gustavo Moreno continued to face pressure including a rocket from
Chaz Armand, which Moreno bravely caught with his chest.
With 1:30 to play in the first extra period, FDU-Florham junior
Robby Bonjione delivered a well-struck header toward the left side of the net but Moreno was up to task and made a diving lunge to knock the shot just wide of the post.
The Devils remained undeterred and two minutes into the second overtime persevered with the winning strike. Following a flurry in front of the net, which left Moreno off his line, junior midfielder
George Batista lofted a perfect cross-field pass to Gallo, who promptly knocked it in for the game-winner.
FDU-Florham goalkeeper
Nick Mihalik was mostly untested in the win as his defense clamped down on the Knights all game long and ensured all three of their shots were off target.
Bonjione and
Andrew Ruane helped push the Devils' offense by combining for eight shots including six on target in the win
In their next contest, the Devils host SUNY Old Westbury this Saturday, September 5 at 11 a.m.
