Big Offensive Day Leads Devils Past Panthers

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham men's soccer team exploded for seven goals en route to a 7-3 victory over SUNY Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.

The Devils (2-0) scored the first five goals of the game to stake a 5-0 lead at intermission and never looked back. The Panthers (0-2) netted the first two scores of the second stanza but the Devils tacked on two more of their own to secure the victory.

FDU-Florham junior forward Andrew Ruane paced a balanced attack with two goals on the day.

Ruane opened the high-scoring affair 5:10 into action by knocking in a feed from Jose Guardado. Four minutes later, Guardado netted a goal of his own when team captain Sebastian Gallo sent a long through ball across midfield and behind the Panthers' defense that found Guardado in stride for an easy finish.

The pace settled in and then in the 31st minute FDU-Florham junior midfielder AJ Carnevale got in on the action with a well-earned score. Carnevale backed down his defender in the box before turning to his left and immediately firing a rocket off of Panthers goalkeeper Peter Sicardi and into the back of the net.

Guardado set up the Devils' fourth goal by serving up a header to Gallo who promptly delivered the lofty pass into the back of the net. Robby Bonjione would add the fifth goal of the half and the Devils carried that advantage into the break.

FDU-Florham outshot the Panthers 12-3 in the first half and eventually went on to out fire their opponent 24-8 in the contest.

Ruane and Jay Bower each added another tally in the second half, which sealed the win.

The Panthers were led by Dominick Guidice, who scored two of his team's three goals. Sicardi made eight stops for Old Westbury in the loss.

FDU-Florham returns to action this Wednesday, September 9 when they host cross-street rival Drew University at 7 p.m. in the annual Battle of Madison Avenue.
