Devils Shine in Season Opener with 5-2 Win over Pioneers

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham field hockey team opened up their 2015 campaign with a five goal outburst to push them past the William Paterson University Pioneers 5-2 on Tuesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.

Junior Kim Davis and senior Alicia Grotyohann led the charge for the Devils (1-0) on the offense end as they each notched a pair of goals in the contest.

Just over 20 minutes into action, a swarm of players surrounded the Pioneers' cage and freshman forward Kelly O'Neill was able to get her stick on the ball and send it in the direction of Grotyohann. The senior forward then swung her stick and sent the ball into the cage to give the Devils a 1-0 advantage.

The Devils were in complete control in the first half on both sides of the field as they limited the Pioneers (0-1) to just two shots.

Early in the second half, the Devils looked to add to their one goal lead.

Grotyohann found the ball in front of the cage and took a shot, but it was saved by Pioneers' goalie, Meg Davies. However, the ball ricocheted back to Grotyohann and she capitalized by firing it past Davies for her second goal of the night.

Following Grotoyohann's score, the Devils got possession of the ball and worked their way down the field, eventually drawing a corner. Davis took the corner and rifled the ball into the crease and as the ball rolled past several sticks near the cage, Noelle Shirey got a hold of it and found a streaking Davis for the score.

Trailing 3-0, the Pioneers called a timeout to regain their composure. The break rejuvenated the Pioneers' offense and they came out aggressive.

As they controlled the ball on the Devils side of the field, Felicia Wetzel took a shot and it bounced off of the post. As the ball came off of the post, it landed right in front of McKenna Reynolds and she slapped the shot into the net for the first Pioneers' score of the night.

Less than three minutes later, Wetzel got the ball off of a corner and dished it over to Reynolds, who fired the shot past a diving Samantha Klimaszewski to trim the deficit to one.

The Devils had a couple of scoring opportunities to extend the lead but came up just short, sending the shots wide. However, the Devils got another chance when junior Erin O'Connell sent a booming pass into the crease and Davis shot it into the cage.

Looking to add another insurance goal, the Devils were awarded a corner and after O'Neill's shot was sent away by Davies, freshman Brooke Sherwin got the ball and flicked it up over the goalie for her first career collegiate score.

The Devils were strong on both ends of the field and by controlling the ball for majority of the contest, they were able to outshoot the Pioneers 18-8.

The Devils will be back in action on Thursday, September 3, as they welcome the Owls of Rowan University to Madison for a non-conference showdown.
