GALLOWAY, N.J. – Five different Devils found the back of the net for a goal, but it was not enough as the FDU-Florham men's lacrosse team was outscored in every period and was defeated by the Stockton University Ospreys Saturday afternoon in Galloway, N.J.
The Devils (0-2) tried to jump on the board early with a Jake Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J.) shot, but Stockton goalie, Eric Leonard made the save. It was a reoccurring theme as Leonard recorded 15 saves on the afternoon. Once the Ospreys (2-0) retained possession, they flew to the net and it was senior midfielder Matt Town, who scored the first goal of the game.
Looking for another scoring chance, Higgins got the ball back and tied the game up 1-1. However, with eight seconds left in the quarter, Stockton's Nick Bologno netted a goal off a Lance Pecina assist to help the Ospreys retake the lead. Bologno finished the game with two goals and three assists.
A few minutes into the second quarter, Daniel Minnich (Laurys Station, Pa.) received a pass from Dan Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.) and Minnich sent the ball to the back of the net to tie the game up once again.
Following the Minnich goal for the Devils, the Ospreys won three straight face offs and capitalized on three consecutive possessions. Junior Vincent Manasia was responsible for two of the three goals scored by Stockton and he was a menace of the offensive end, scoring four goals on seven shots in the contest. The Devils countered with a Sagl goal right before the half to cut the deficit to two.
Down 5-3 entering the third quarter, Minnich had the ball and sent it over to David Stewart (Narbeth, Pa.) who scored the goal, making it a one goal game. The Ospreys went on to score two more goals. Frank Reda (Hauppauge, N.Y.) responded once he got a ball from Higgins and sent it to the back of the net.
After Reda's goal, it was Manasia again who scored two quick goals, less than a minute apart from one another.
To cap the game off it was Town for his second goal of the game to seal the 10-5 victory in favor of the Ospreys.
It was a tough offensive game for the Devils as they were outshot 44-31 by the Ospreys. On the defensive end, both Peter Biondi (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Dalton Rimmer (Vernon, N.J.) picked up 6 ground balls and combined to cause three Osprey turnovers.
The Devils will return Madison on Wednesday, March 4, to take on Farmingdale State College at 7 p.m.
