MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham volleyball team cruised to an important Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) over Misericordia University on Tuesday night at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
It took just 62 minutes for the Devils (17-4, 3-1 MAC Freedom) to complete the three-set sweep of the Cougars (7-15, 3-1 MAC Freedom) 25-11, 25-19, 25-16 and pull even with them in the conference standings.
Melissa Gaffney paced the FDU-Florham attack with a match-high nine kills, while
Codi Inloes-Williams and
Kristi Wong each dished out 14 assists in the victory.
In the first set, the Devils broke up a 9-6 game by rattling off eight straight points to stretch their advantage to 17-6. Gaffney served through that run with
Lauren Harris and
Kalyn Herburger supplying the front row firepower by punishing six kills over that stretch. Harris totaled seven kills, while Herburger chipped in four on the night.
The Devils remained in control from that point and prevented the Cougars from taking a lead over the final two sets.
In addition to her assists, Wong added 12 digs to her ledger, which trailed only Harris, who had 14, and
Alex Mueller's 15.
Meghan Stack paced the Cougars with eight kills, while
Nicole Tagerty finished with 13 assists and 14 digs in the loss.
The Devils take a break from conference action this weekend when they travel to Gallaudet University for a two-day tournament, which begins with Virginia Wesleyan College this Friday, October 9 at 4 p.m. The Devils topped the Marlins 3-1 earlier this season when they kicked off the campaign in Norfolk, Va.
