MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham field hockey team had their four-game winning streak snapped when they were defeated 2-0 by the King's College Monarchs on Saturday afternoon in a MAC Freedom match at Robert T. Shields Field.
The Devils (7-4, 1-1 MAC Freedom) outshot the Monarchs (9-3, 2-0 MAC Freedom) 15-8 in the contest, but two first half goals by King's proved to be enough.
In the fifth minute of play, the ball was shot into the circle by Caitlin Wood and as the ball neared the cage, Kelsey Gabriele redirected it past the Devils' goalkeeper, Amy Defnet, for the score. Defnet tallied five saves in the contest.
The Devils tried to counter, earning nine corners and taking five shots, but they could not capitalize.
Meanwhile, King's regained possession in the 20th minute and as the ball trickled back into the circle off of a save by Defnet, Madysen Jones stepped up and put it into the back of the cage to give the Monarchs a 2-0 advantage.
Once again, the Devils looked to answer and they took seven shots following the Monarch's second goal but came up short. King's goalkeeper Paige Tedik notched three of her six total saves during that stretch.
In the 45th minute, Alicia Grotyohann worked her way down the field towards the Monarch's cage and took a shot, but a crucial defensive save was made by Nicole Sott.
During the closing minutes of the contest, senior midfielder Stephanie Geskes placed two shots on the cage but Tedik sent both of them away to preserve the shutout.
The Devils will travel to La Plume, Pa. on Wednesday, October 7, for a non-conference showdown with Keystone College that is slated to start at 4 p.m.
