Defnet Makes 11 Saves in 1-0 Loss to No. 10 Red Hawks

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham field hockey team closed out its 2015 regular season with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to No. 10 Montclair State University at Robert T. Shields Field on Thursday night.

The Devils (13-6, 6-1 MAC Freedom) limited the Red Hawks (14-4) attack but a penalty stroke in the 43rd minute was the difference.

Celebrating senior night, Devils goalkeeper Amy Defnet had an outstanding game. The senior netminder made 11 saves in the contest as the Red Hawks held a 15-7 advantage in shot attempts.

It took until 5:55 into action for the first shot of the game when Charisse Myers sent a shot at Defnet off of a penalty corner. The game proceeded as both defenses prevented scoring opportunities and the Devils registered the second shot of the contest at the 18:26 mark when Kim Davis delivered a pair of shots. Davis' first go was saved by Redhawks goalkeeper Rebecca Brattole and her second attempt sailed wide.

Davis' two shots accounted for all of the Devils' first half offense as the Red Hawks controlled the tempo and earned eight penalty corners and eight shots.

At the 42:16 mark, a violation by the Devils awarded the Red Hawks a penalty stroke and Myers delivered the game-deciding goal. The senior defender faked left and shot right and buried the stroke into the back right of the cage.

The Devils pushed down the field and put three shots on cage in the next four minutes but Brattole turned away each of them including a quality scoring chance for Stephanie Geskes. Brattole finished with five stops in the game.

With 2:32 to go, the Devils earned a penalty corner and Davis pushed toward the net but was turned away Brattole. Davis, the MAC Freedom's leading goal scorer, led the Devils with four shots in the contest.

The Devils will now prepare for the MAC Freedom Tournament, which begins next Wednesday, November 4 at 7 p.m. against Wilkes University at Robert T. Shields Field.
