Devils Advance to MAC Freedom Championship With Dominant 4-1 Win

MADISON, N.J. – The top-seeded FDU-Florham field hockey team rolled to a 4-1 victory over Wilkes University in the MAC Freedom Tournament Semifinals at Robert T. Shields Field on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Devils (14-6, 6-1 MAC Freedom) advance to host No. 3 seed Misericordia University (9-11, 5-2 MAC Freedom) this Saturday, November 4 in the MAC Freedom Championship Game at 1 p.m. The Devils topped the Cougars 4-2 earlier this season in Dallas, Pa.

On Wednesday night, the Devils pounced on the Colonels (10-10) and never let up, burying the game's first three scores en route to the victory.

Kim Davis struck first when she was awarded a penalty stroke at the 15:33 mark. With textbook form, the junior forward threw her shot into the upper left corner of the cage for the game's first goal.

Just under 10 minutes later, Davis set up freshman forward Brooke Sherwin for a 2-0 Devils lead. Sherwin received the penalty corner pass from Davis, spotted an opening on the left side of the crease and promptly fired a shot between Wilkes goalkeeper Dallas Kendra's pads and the left post. The goal was Sherwin's seventh of the season, while Davis' assist was her team-leading seventh.

The Devils dominated possession and carried that two-goal edge into the break. Defense was the key for the home team as they prevented the Colonels from attempting a single shot over the first 35 minutes of action. Led by freshman Makayla Pak, the Devils backline thwarted all scoring opportunities for the opposition.

In the 49th minute, senior Stephanie Geskes got in on the action when the team was awarded its second penalty stroke of the game. Geskes stepped up and scorched a shot into the right side of the cage past a diving Kendra.

The Colonels got one back when Keighlyn Oliver captured a pass from Alysa Adams in the box and knocked it in from the right side but the Devils immediately answered 1:15 later with Kelly O'Neill's first collegiate goal.

O'Neill charged ahead and used her momentum to tap in a pass from teammate Kylee Cintron. Cintron's helper was also her first as a Devil.

Once the final whistle sounded, the Devils had outshot the Colonels 24-5 and held a 15-5 advantage in penalty corners.
