WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore wide receiver
Malik Pressley hauled in two touchdown catches but the FDU-Florham football team came up short in a 44-20 loss to Lycoming College at David Person Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Devils (2-5, 1-5 MAC) pulled even with the Warriors (2-5, 2-4 MAC) at 7-7 in the first quarter but 21 unanswered points broke the game wide open.
In the loss, Pressley, the Middle Atlantic Conference leader in all major receiving categories, hauled in his conference-best ninth and tenth touchdowns of the campaign. The second-year wide out entered the game ranked tied for 16
th in the nation in touchdown receptions. Pressley finished with 14 catches for 98 yards on the afternoon.
Devils senior quarterback
Tyler Maurer broke his own school record for passes in a game,58, by tossing the ball 62 times in the loss. Maurer's final line consisted of 35 completions on those 62 attempts for 287 yards and three scores.
Junior running back
Blake Bowman piled up the yards to lead the Warriors' offense and finished with 281 yards on 30 carries, including four touchdowns. Coming into Saturday's contest, Bowman was the second leading rusher in the conference at 95.5 yards per outing.
After both teams failed to score on their first possessions, the Warriors mounted a five-play, 50-yard drive, which was capped by Bowman's first score of the day, a 12-yard scamper. Lycoming quarterback
Chase Whiteman completed a 28-yard pass to
Ryan Umpleby earlier in the drive to setup the red zone opportunity. Whiteman finished with 135 yards passing on the day.
The Devils immediately answered on the ensuing possession by marching 78 yards on 13 plays. Maurer completed seven-straight passes on the drive before eventually drilling Pressley with a one-yard touchdown, which evened the score at 7-7.
On the first play of the next drive, Whiteman hit Umpleby for a 34-yard pass that finished deep in Devils territory. Sophomore running back
Scott Palmer carried the mail seven times on the drive before eventually punching it in from two-yards out resulting in a 14-7 Warriors lead.
The Warriors outscored the Devils 14-0 in the second quarter with an Umpleby touchdown reception representing the first score and Bowman's second touchdown of the day as the other. They continued their success out of the break by driving 69 yards on eight plays with Bowman's third score capping the drive for a 35-7 cushion.
Pressley hauled in an 11-yard pass for the Devils' next score and Maurer connected with
Esaun Mobley for a one-yard touchdown, which concluded the team's scoring. Mobley finished with four catches for 50 yards on the day.
Senior running back
Anthony Ognibene led the Devils backfield with 73 yards on 14 carries in the loss. Defensively,
Isaiah Turner and
Stephen Bick each recorded 11 tackles for the Devils.
FDU-Florham returns to action next Saturday, October 31 when they host Misericordia University at 1 p.m.
