Devils Drop Four-Set Non-Conference Tilt to Greyhounds

MADISON. N.J. – The FDU-Florham volleyball team coasted to a 25-11 win in the first set but the Moravian College Greyhounds claimed the next three in a 3-1 (10-25, 25-23, 34-32, 25-20) victory at the Ferguson Recreation Center on Thursday night.

The Devils (21-9, 4-2 MAC Freedom) came out of the gates strong, however, the Greyhounds (14-14, 3-4 Landmark) rallied for the win.

In the first set of the night, the Devils looked sharp and jumped out to a 12-2 lead. Alex Mueller and Lauren Harris continuously floated difficult serves, which kept the Greyhounds off balance as the Devils came out with a 25-11 victory.

From that point forward, the Greyhounds looked like a different team. Trailing 23-22, a double block by Erin Tiger and Jordy Jacques evened the score before Taylor Kornman eventually closed the set two points later with a smash that painted the line. Kornmann finished with a match-high 22 kills.

The third set featured a neck-and-neck battle, which resulted in the Devils' longest frame of the season. Each team willed off multiple set points to further extend the set beyond regulation. With the Devils in front 32-31 and looking for the decisive point, Kornmann came through again to even the score at 32-32. The final two points ended on back-to-back kills by Moravian's Mary Zacher resulting in the 34-32 final.

With all the momentum, the Greyhounds comfortably claimed the fourth and final set 25-20.

Lauren Harris led the Devils with 15 kills and three service aces, while Kristi Wong dished out 26 assists and Codi-Inloes Williams handed out 15 in the loss.

Both teams' back rows were busy as Mueller 30 digs, Harris 16 digs and Rachel Catena 13 digs all reached double digits in attack returns. For Moravian, libero Jean Markovic was all over the floor and compiled a match-high 33 digs, while teammates Zacher and Megan Szkolnicki added 18 and 13 respectively.

The Devils registered a .222 attack percentage in the first set but failed to find that success in the final three sets, while the Greyhounds countered a -.028 first-set attack percentage by increasing their efficiency the rest of the way.

Up next for the Devils is a trip to Westminster, Md. to compete in a tri-match at McDaniel College this Saturday, October 24 at 2 p.m.
