UNION, N.J. – The FDU-Florham volleyball team opened up the Kean Tri-Match with a 3-0 (26-24, 27-25, 25-16) sweep over the Arcadia University Knights, but was then defeated by Millikin University 3-1 (15-25, 26-24, 16-25, 14-25) in their second match on Saturday afternoon in Union, N.J.
vs. Arcadia University Knights (9-12)
The Devils (20-7) were pushed to their limits in the opening match against the Arcadia University Knights (9-12). However, the Devils managed to come out on top with the two freshmen, Lauren Harris and Kate Quinlan leading the team with seven kills apiece.
Fellow freshman Kristi Wong was the lead setter and totaled 21 assists in the match.
The Knights used a late rally in the opening set to knot the score up at 24-24. However, FDU-Florham responded with kills from Melissa Gaffney and Sarah Hof to grab the 1-0 lead.
The second set came down to the wire but the Devils edged it out 27-25 after two costly attack errors by the Knights.
In the final set of the match, the Devils rattled off 10 consecutive points to grab the 25-16 win and 3-0 overall sweep over the Knights.
vs. Millikin University Big Blue (17-8)
The Devils (20-8) were pinned up against Millikin University (17-8) in the second match of the afternoon. The freshman, Harris, led the attack for the FDU-Florham with a double-double. She totaled 11 kills and 11 digs in the match.
Sophomore Codi-Inloes Williams handled the primary duties as the lead setter, tallying 16 assists.
The Devils dropped the opening set against Big Blue 25-15. However, two Harris kills helped FDU-Florham claim the second set 26-24.
FDU-Florham was then limited in the third and fourth set as Big Blue showcased a heavy offensive attack. Millikin had three girls with 10 or more kills in the match. Emily Mihalkanin did her part setting up her teammates all afternoon and she recorded a game-high 43 assists in the four-set match against the Devils.
The Devils will return to Madison for a MAC Freedom match with Delaware Valley University on Tuesday, October 20. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
