Costly Turnovers Doom Devils against No. 17 Lions

MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham football team played the 17th-ranked Albright College Lions evenly through most of the first half but costly turnovers sealed their fate in a 51-6 loss in the annual homecoming game at Robert T. Shields Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Devils (2-4, 1-4 MAC) saw the unbeaten Lions (6-0, 5-0 MAC) rattle off 45 unanswered points from the late stages of the second quarter through the game's final whistle.

In the loss, the Devils amassed 230 yards through the air but several promising drives ended with turnovers, as the feisty Lions' defense came up with five interceptions and recovered three fumbles in the contest.

Making his second collegiate start, Joseph McCain tossed for 201 yards and one touchdown. McCain's favorite target was Esaun Mobley, who hauled in 10 catches for 75 yards and a score. Seven different Devils tallied receptions, led by Mobley's 10 and Malik Pressley's five-catch effort.

FDU-Florham junior safety Chris Fitzgerald, who entered the game ranked fifth in the country in solo tackles per game, made 10 stops on the day.

Albright's freshman signal caller Mike Knight completed 13-of-18 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns before exiting the game in the final quarter. Roemello Monroe eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the Lions in the win with 116 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown.

The Devils defense showed tremendous grit in the first quarter. Albright's first possession began in Devils territory and advanced to 1st-and-goal from the 9-yard line. But the Devils defense stopped Knight and running back Chris Dawson on consecutive tries from the 2-yard line to force a turnover on downs.

After recovering a fumble, the Lions' next possession again began deep inside Devils territory. Once again, Dawson eventually had a shot from the 2-yard line but the Devils defense held and forced the Lions to settle for a 29-yard field goal, which All-American placekicker Daniel Sobolewski hooked left and the game remained scoreless.

On their next possession, the Devils put together a promising drive and advanced to the fringe of the red zone but Luis Quinones intercepted a McCain pass, which immediately halted the drive.

The Lions marched down the field in 11 plays before Dawson found pay dirt for the game's first score. On the Devils' first play from scrimmage an errant exchange on the snap allowed the Lions to take over at the FDU-Florham 37-yardline. Again, the Devils defense stood tough and forced another Sobolewski field goal, which was swept up by the gusty winds and landed well short of the goalposts.

McCain proceeded to guide the Devils down the field on a 13-play, 73-yard drive before finding Mobley in the end zone to tie the game at 6-6.

After Albright responded with a scoring drive, another Devils interception gave the Lions the ball at the FDU-Florham 20-yard line. Knight quickly hooked up with Gerrod Gainer for a 16-yard touchdown strike, which pushed the Lions' lead to 20-6 just before halftime.

The Lions matriculated 82 yards on their opening drive of the second stanza and Dawson capped off the excursion with a 1-yard touchdown plunge. Albright maintained control for the remainder of the contest en route to the comfortable victory.

The Devils head on the road next weekend when they travel to Williamsport, Pa. to take on Lycoming College Saturday, October 24 at 1 p.m.
