MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham men's soccer team was unable to hold off a second-half push by King's College and ultimately fell 3-2 in double overtime on Wednesday afternoon at the Florham Campus Grass Field.
King's forward
Daniel Lorandini delivered the game-winning strike 2:37 into the second extra frame to complete the comeback victory.
The pivotal conference match resulted in the Devils' (6-6-1, 2-1 MAC Freedom) first conference loss of the season, while the Monarchs (11-2-1, 2-0-1 MAC Freedom) remained unbeaten in MAC Freedom play.
The Devils kicked off the scoring when
Andrew Ruane delivered one of his exceptionally long throw-ins, which bounced its way across the box to
Chaz Armand, who snuck his shot inside of the left post for 1-0 lead 10:06 into action.
In the 30 minute, Ruane set up the Devils' second goal by sending a 30-yard pass up field to
AJ Carnevale. Carnevale quickly settled the ball before firing past Monarch goalkeeper
Owen Geedey for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
That lead stood through intermission and the Devils appeared to be in control until the 54
th minute when the Monarchs got on the board with a fortunate break.
Chris Nygren tossed a throw-in toward left side of the box that ricocheted off the back of a Devil defender and past goalkeeper
Nick Mihalik.
Leading 2-1, the Devils defense continued on and turned away several close chances for the Monarchs. But at the 82:22 mark, the Monarchs found the equalizer. After a great entry pass off of a set piece, Mihalik made an outstanding point-blank save on
Kevin Hagmeier, however, the rebound went right to Monarchs sophomore
Brendan Raab, who immediately fired it into the back of the net.
The game proceeded to the first overtime period where each team attempted one shot. Then in the 102
nd minute, Lorandini took a shot from 10-yards out that bounced awkwardly toward the goal and eluded Mihalik for the decisive score.
Lorandini's goal was his second of the season and gave the Monarchs their fourth win in their last five games. King's outshot the Devils 14-9 in the contest and Mihalik made four saves to Geedey's one.
The two teams each earned eight corner kicks on the day.
FDU-Florham returns to action this Saturday, October 17 when they host Delaware Valley University in a crucial conference match at 2 p.m.
