MADISON, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham men's soccer team was defeated 3-1 by Centenary College on Tuesday night at Robert T. Shields Field.
The Devils (2-4-3, 0-0 Freedom) jumped in front 1-0 in the first half but unfortunately were unable to score again, as the Cyclones (5-2-1) breezed past them en route to the 3-1 victory. The two teams battled for every inch of the field and it was reflected in the box score, as nine yellow cards were handed out on the night.
Sophomore back
Robby Bonjione (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) put the Devils on top 1-0 when he headed in a perfect corner kick from fellow sophomore
AJ Carnevale (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) 8:39 into action. The goal was Bonjione's second of the season. One minute later, sophomore defender
Sebastian Gallo (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) nearly gave the Devils a two-goal advantage but his header was cleared off of the goaline by a Cyclone back.
Aided by their own corner kick, the Cyclones evened the score less than ten minutes later when
Glenn Brennen headed in the pass from
Sebastian Castillo. The game remained tied at 1-1 heading into intermission.
In the 49th minute, FDU-Florham goalkeeper
Nick Mihalik (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) made an oustanding save on Centenary's
Abiodun Lawal, however,
Magno Franco was there waiting for the rebound and promptly knocked it into the back of the net for the game's decisive goal.
Later in the half, senior captain
Tommy Asselta (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) almost brought the Devils even with an outstanding set piece but his shot at the upper right corner of the net hooked just wide and the Cyclones remained on top.
After being awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute, the Cyclones added an insurance goal courtesy of the team's leading scorer,
Quinn Khouri. Mihalik managed to stop the initial penalty kick attempt but Khouri quickly followed it up and tapped in the rebound for the team's third tally.
The Devils dropped the contest despite holding a 16-11 advantage in shots and 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Mihalik made five saves in defeat, while Centenary keeper
Jesse Goleman turned away eight shots to earn the win.
