MADISON, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham men's soccer team (2-5-3) suffered a 2-1 loss to Widener University (7-1-1) on Saturday evening at Robert T. Shields Field.
The Devils held a 1-0 advantage at the break, however, the Pride rallied with two second-half strikes to go ahead for the 2-1 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper
JT Bretschneider (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) earned the start in net and turned away four shots in the loss, including a crucial stop in a one-on-one situation.
Eight minutes into action, sophomore
Robby Bonjione (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) nearly got the Devils on the board but his header ricocheted off of the crossbar. However, in the 24th minute, sophomore midfielder
AJ Carnevale (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro North) cleverly worked his way into the Pride's zone and sent a perfect cross into the box that
Dylan Meyler (Somerdale, N.J./Triton Regional) knocked in for his first goal of the season, which gave the Devils a 1-0 lead.
Despite several close calls for both teams, the game remained 1-0 at intermission. The Devils fired 10 shots in the opening stanza to just three attempts by Widener.
Widener junior
Tori Remondelli launched a strike from 25-yards out that alluded a diving Bretschneider and evened the contest at 1-1 with just over 20 minutes to play. The goal was Remondelli's team-leading 11th of the season. The Pride continued the pressure and it paid off when
John Colbert fired a shot into the box that caromed off of an FDU-Florham defender and into the back of the net for the game's deciding goal.
FDU-Florham had a late-second scoring opportunity but sophomore
Justin Barbosa's (Clark, N.J./Johnson Regional) shot attempt was secured by Widener goalkeeper
Dave Sousa. Sousa made four saves in the win.
