Devils Upend Cross-Street Rangers

MADISON, N.J. -- Gabriella D'Amico (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview) netted two goals as the FDU-Florham field hockey team topped Drew University 4-1 on Tuesday night in the annual "Battle of Madison Avenue."

The Devils (5-3, 0-0 Freedom) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 38 seconds into play and never looked back, building a 4-0 cushion en route to the three-goal victory. With the loss, the Rangers fell to 0-7 on the campaign.

In the game's first minute, sophomore Kim Davis (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) gave the Devils a 1-0 advantage by firing home a pass from Alicia Theoret (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Boro) for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Seven minutes into play, it was Davis' turn to assist and the sophomore found D'Amico waiting on the far post for her first goal of the night.

Theoret sent the Devils into the break with a 3-0 lead after knocking home a great feed from freshman forward Alexa Paparo (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern). The goal was Theoret's first of the season.

FDU-Florham netminder Amy Defnet (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) was outstanding in goal for the Devils. The sophomore keeper turned away seven shots and discouraged the Rangers all night long. Drew's offense worked hard and earned 14 penalty corners in the second half but were continually thwarted by the FDU-Florham defense. In the 57th minute, D'Amico tacked on a fourth goal for the Devils, which secured the victory.

Drew junior midfielder Bea Cannavale ruined Defnet's shutout by scoring from the top of the circle off of an assist from junior Amber DeMarco in the 69th minute.

The Devils earned the victory despite being out shot 11-9 in the contest and the Rangers holding a 16-3 advantage on penalty corners.
