MADISON, N.J. – The FDU-Florham men's soccer team and the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights played to the wire in a double overtime game that finished deadlocked at 0-0 Saturday afternoon at Robert T. Shields Field.
NJCU (1-5-3) has become familiar with close games, having now played in six overtime games this season. The Devils (2-3-3), coming off a double overtime game of their own, played comfortable in a tight game, controlling possession of the ball and outshooting the Gothic Knights 12-6.
Senior
Tommy Asselta (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) was the first to test the NJCU goalkeeper,
Tyler Krychkowski, and the shot was saved. The Devils kept applying the pressure and finished the game with six shots on goal, however, Krychkowski did his part, picking up six saves.
The Gothic Knights were held in check by a strong performance from the Devils defense that did not allow a single shot on goal. Sophomore
Andrew Ruane (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills) was a big part of the defensive effort put forth by the Devils and he also contributed immensely on the offensive end. Ruane sent the ball deep into the box numerous times on throw-ins from the sidelines resulting in some near goals for the Devils.
The best scoring chance for either team came three minutes into the final overtime when
Davauni Brown of the Gothic Knights was one-on-one with Devils goalkeeper
Nick Mihalik (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley).
Brown saw his opening and took the shot, but sailed the ball high over the goal.
Unfortunately, time ran out on the two teams who were unable to find the one outcome-changing score.
