EWING, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham men's soccer team and The College of New Jersey Lions battled for 105 minutes on Wednesday night at Lions Stadium.
The Devils (2-3-2) have now played to a tie for the second time in their last three contests. As for the Lions (3-3-2), they have now picked up a draw in back-to-back games, after tying the Drew University Rangers 0-0 earlier this week.
Despite five shots on net in the first 45 minutes of action, the Devils were unable to get on the board and the two teams entered the break knotted at 0-0. Following the scoreless first half, TCNJ wasted no time netting the first goal of the game. Just 12 seconds into the second stanza, Lions' freshman
Michael Kassack took advantage of an FDU-Florham turnover to net his first-collegiate goal, which gave the home team a 1-0 advantage.
One minute later, the Devils found the equalizer when sophomore midfielder
AJ Carnevale (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro North) scored his second goal of the season. Senior captain
Tommy Asselta (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) setup the tally with a beautiful chip-pass over the defense that was promptly secured by Carnevale and deposited into the back of the net.
In the first overtime period, the Devils nearly claimed the victory as freshman
Brandon DeOliveira (Cranford, N.J./Union County Vo-Tech) hit a bouncing ball off of the crossbar. DeOliveira's near miss caromed off of the bar and over the net, which did not allow for a rebound.
Sophomore
Robby Bonjione (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) presented another great scoring chance for the Devils in overtime number two with a throw-in on goal, however, the Lions defense managed to clear it out before FDU-Florham could capitalize.
FDU-Florham goalkeeper
Nick Mihalik (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) made two stops in the game, while TCNJ netminder
Jake Nesteruk denied six shots.
