Battle of Madison Ave. Ends in Draw

MADISON, N.J. -- The FDU-Florham Devils men's soccer team battled cross-street rival Drew University for 110 minutes on Wednesday night, however, the game resulted in a 2-2 tie.

The Devils (2-2-1) rallied to tie the game in the 79 minute but neither side were able to score again despite two extra periods at Ranger Stadium.

FDU-Florham led 1-0 at the break thanks to Chaz Armand's (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) first goal of the season. The junior forward charged in and scored off of his own rebound to put the Devils ahead in the 22nd minute. The two teams combined to fire 22 shots in the first 45 minutes of action but it only resulted in the lone goal.

In the 59th minute, the Rangers (2-1-2) evened the score as Benjamin Audi launched a one-timer from John Nogiewich passed Devils goalkeeper Nick Mihalik (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and into the back of the net. After the two teams exchanged several scoring opportunities, the Rangers went ahead when junior defender Daniel Giraldo cleaned up a scrum in front of the net and tucked a shot inside of the right post.

The Devils continued to pressure the Rangers defense and it paid off. Less than two minutes later, senior captain Tommy Asselta (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) netted the equalizer. Asselta attacked a loose ball in Drew's box, which resulted in his third goal of the season and a 2-2 game. The draw breaks a 31-match win streak for the Rangers in the rivalry.

FDU-Florham was outshot 24-20 in the contest but held a narrow 4-3 edge in overtime shot atttempts. Mihalik came up big in overtime and made two crucial saves to preserve the draw. The sophomore keeper made eight stops in the game after missing last game with an injury.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham heads down to Stockton University this Saturday, September 10th to takes on the Ospreys with start time slated for 1 p.m.
