Box Score 2 SEGUIN, Texas -- The FDU-Florham volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday by defeating Schreiner University 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 31-29) and falling to Willamette University 0-3 (19-25, 11-25, 10-25) on day one of the Texas Lutheran University Bulldog Classic.
The Devils dropped their first match of the day to the Bearcats of Willamette University before claiming their first victory of 2014 later in the day over the Mountaineers from Schreiner University.
Leading the way in the victory for FDU-Florham was freshman
Melissa Gaffney (League City, Texas/Clear Creek). The Texas native, notched 13 kills in the win, while also compiling a team-high 19 digs. Joining Gaffney with double-digit kills, was sophomore hitter
Alex Barnett (Winchester, Va./Handley), who put away 10 balls on 17 total attacks, which equated to an efficient .588 kill percentage.
Making her collegiate debut, freshman setter
Codi Inloes-Williams (Palmer Lake, Colo./Liberty) handed out 29 assists and totaled 11 digs. In defeat, Mountaineers seniorÂ
Kelli Bolen totaled 17 assists, while juniorÂ
Alyssa Chapman added nine kills.
In their first match of the day, the Devils were unable to find a rhythm against the Bearcats and dropped all three sets. Gaffney managed 10 kills in defeat, while Inloes-Williams totaled 16 assists in the match.Â
FDU-Florham struggled to close out volleys and posted a -.045 kill percentage in the loss, while Willamette hit .253 as a team and tallied 31 kills. JuniorÂ
Lindsey Compton paced the Bearcats with 21 assists on the day.
