Devils Drop Two Matches on Saturday in Texas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEGUIN, TEXAS -- The FDU-Florham Devils volleyball team was unable to build on yesterday's victory and dropped both matches on Saturday at the Texas Lutheran University Bulldog Classic.

The Devils (1-3), lost to Lewis & Clark College in straight sets (17-25, 19-25, 13-25) before dropping a tight contest to LeTourneau University 3-2 (16-25, 12-25, 25-19, 31-29, 9-15) in their second match of the day. Freshman standout Melissa Gaffney (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) posted nine kills in match one to top the Devils, while freshman Natalie Knudsen (Chester, N.J./Mendham) and sophomore DeAnna D'Amico (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley) totaled 11 kills apiece in match number two.

Match One:
In match one, the Devils battled through the first set before the Pioneers took advantage of back-to-back FDU-Florham errors to claim a 12-10 lead and ultimately claimed the set 25-17. In the second set, the Devils led 10-5 before the Pioneers fought back and eventually rattled off nine-straight points to claim a 17-12 lead. Isabel Valentine and Kataleya Milan led the way for the Pioneers with seven kills apiece.

Match Two:
After dropping the first two sets, the Devils managed to counter by scoring eight of the last 10 points in set number three to fight back to 2-1. The fourth set was a neck-and-neck battle throughout, with each team staving off match-points. Holding a 30-29 lead, FDU-Florham finally put an end to the set when Gaffney killed a set from Codi Inloes-Williams (Palmer Lake, Colo./Liberty) and evened the match at two games aside. In the decisive fifth set, FDU-Florham fell behind 6-1 but rallied with the next five points to knot the contest at 6-6. Unfortunately, the YellowJackets settled in and pulled away with a 15-9 win. Inloes-Williams handed out 39 assists in the loss, while Kayla Ronda paced the LeTourneau attack with 15 kills.

Inloes-Williams was named to the All-Tournament second team at the conclusion of the weekend.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham hosts their first matches of the season Wednesday, September 3rd when Lehman College and Purchase College come to Madison for a tr-match. First serve is slated for 4 p.m. at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
