No. 5 Devils Dominant in NCAA Tournament First Round Victory

Box Score MADISON, N.J. – Five Devils posted double-digit scoring efforts, as the fifth-ranked FDU-Florham women's basketball team rolled to a 106-45 win over Wells College in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday night at the Ferguson Recreation Center.

With the win, the Devils (28-0) advance to take on Messiah College (21-7), who defeated Randolph-Macon College 91-62 earlier on Saturday, in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament tomorrow evening at 5 p.m. The two teams are both members of the Middle Atlantic Conference, as Messiah College earned their NCAA bid by claiming the Commonwealth Championship.

FDU-Florham was locked in from the opening tip, which riled up the raucous home-crowd early in the contest. After a layup by junior forward Kaitlynne Knapp, the Express held an 8-7 lead, however, Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) converted a lay-in to put the Devils back on top. FDU-Florham proceeded to run away from Wells by scoring the game's next 10 points, which built a 17-8 lead with 15:16 to play in the opening half.

After a timeout, the Express scored five-straight points before the Devils took off running again with a 17-1 run to earn 35-14 advantage. Devils junior guard Leigh-Ann Lively (Bangor, Pa./Notre Dame) was hot from long range and sparked the FDU-Florham scoring run by drilling her first of four three-pointers on the night. Lively led all scorers in the contest with 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting. The junior guard also hauled in six rebounds and knocked down four of her nine attempts from downtown.

The Devils kept their foot on the pedal and Jalessa Lewis' (Irvington, N.J./Mount St. Dominic) jumper with 36 seconds left, sent FDU-Florham into the break with a 50-22 lead. FDU-Florham shot 19-for-33 (57.6%) in the opening stanza and caused 11 turnovers by the Express. Brown led all scorers at the half with 12 points, while shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor.

Rachel Groom (Edison, N.J./Edison) opened the second-half scoring with a layup, which set the tone for the remainder of the game. With 10:38 to play in the contest, Lively drained another three-ball which put the Devils on top 71-34. The Devils continued to full-court pressure the Express throughout the half and cruised to the finish en route to the 61-point victory.

FDU-Florham featured a balanced attack, as Brown, Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville,), Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) and Delisha Thompson (East Orange, N.J./East Orange Campus) joined Lively by scoring in double-figures. McDonough, the Devils freshman point guard, came off of the bench to score 18 points on 5-for-8 shooting, while handing out six assists and pulling down six rebounds. Brown picked up her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

Wells senior Ashley Roser paced the Express with 14 points in defeat. The senior was the only member of the Express to score in double-figures, and also grabbed seven rebounds in the loss. Wells shot 30.6 percent from the field and failed to make a three-pointer, finishing the game 0-3 from downtown. FDU-Florham drained 10 three-pointers, eight of which came courtesy of Lively and Dayon.

The Devils remain one of only three unbeaten teams in the country and by advancing to the second round, are now the most successful team in the program's history.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham looks to continue their march toward a national championship tomorrow evening, when they take on Messiah College with start time slated for 5 p.m. at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
