NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Led by the dominant play of
Shalette Brown (Somerset, N.J.) and
Kyra Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) the top-ranked FDU-Florham women's basketball team dropped Baruch College 80-68 on Tuesday night at Arc Arena.
FDU-Florham (4-0) has now won 37 games in a row dating back to last season's championship run.
Brown and Dayon were sensational on Tuesday night. Brown, a junior forward, finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds, while the senior forward Dayon totaled 23 points along with 12 rebounds in the victory.
Strength of schedule has been unkind to the Bearcats (1-3), as Baruch faced off against No. 2 Amherst College in their last outing before hosting the top-ranked Devils on Tuesday night. The Devils set the tone on the first possession of the game when sophomore guard
Alyssa McDonough (Parlin, N.J.) interceptedÂ
Alicea Ulmer's pass, which resulted in a lay up for Brown on the other end. FDU-Florham opened up a 13-4 lead less than five minutes into action.
However, Baruch battled back and a three-pointer followd by a free throw fromÂ
Veronica Ganzi gave the Bearcats their first lead of the game with 6:21 to play in the opening stanza. Ganzi finished with a team-high 20 points for Baruch in defeat.
After two buckets by Brown, the Bearcats went back in front with a layup fromÂ
Sheridan Taylor and another three ball from Ganzi but FDU-Florham closed the half with an 8-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer by
Leigh-Ann Lively (Bangor, Pa.) and a last-second layup from Dayon, and entered the break leading 40-32.
In the first half, Brown penciled in a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Dayon nearly matched her teammate with nine points and 12 rebounds at intermission.
Dayon picked up right where she left off by drilling a three-pointer to open the second period. Midway through the half, the Bearcats clawed within three points, but the Devils again pulled away and stretched their lead to double-digits at 62-52.
Late in the half, Baruch rallied again to climb within striking distance but the Devils closed the game out at the charity stripe to finalize the 12-point victory.
The aggressive FDU-Florham defense forced the Bearcats to commit 21 turnovers, while Baruch did not help themselves at the charity stripe, as the home team converted only five of their 15 attempts from the line in the contest.
In the win, Devils senior guard
Kara Dayon (Trenton, N.J.) scored 12 points and fell one rebound shy of joining Brown and Kyra in the double-double club.Â
