Devils Fall to Pride in Scotty Wood Tournament Opener

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The FDU-Florham men's basketball team suffered a 75-49 setback to Widener University in the opening game of the Scotty Wood Tournament on Friday afternoon at Muhlenberg College.

The Devils (0-2) were unable to keep the Pride (3-1) off of the glass as Widener outrebounded FDU-Florham 50-25 in the contest.

In the loss, senior guard Kevin Furlong (Hazlet, N.J.) was the lone Devil to tally double-figures with 11 points. Furlong also added seven rebounds and six assists to his ledger.

Widener senior forward Greg Lawson paced the Pride attack by registering a double-double with a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds.

After the Pride scored the first 10 points of the game, FDU-Florham responded with a 14-3 run to climb within one point. With 8:17 to play in the opening half, a layup by junior forward Jesse Oringer (Chester, N.J.) gave the Devils their first lead of the game at 20-19.

Unfortunately, two minutes later, Widener went in front for good and closed the half with a 16-7 run. The Pride led 35-26 at the break and dominated on the glass with a 25-12 advantage. Although the two teams struggled equally from the field with the FDU-Florham at 34.6 percent and Widener 38.2 percent, the Pride knocked down six three-pointers in the opening stanza to make up the difference.

Widener surged out of the break and in 3:31 seconds extended their lead to 18 points at 48-30. The Pride assumed control and maintained their comfortable cushion for the remainder of the contest. The lead ballooned to as much as 29 points with Lawson leading the way by going 6-for-8 from the floor in the second half.

FDU-Florham struggled mightily in the second half as the Devils made seven of their 26 shot attempts, including 28.6 percent from long range. Meanwhile, the Pride found the touch and knocked down 16 of their 29 shots for 55.2 percent.

Next up for the Devils:
FDU-Florham will take on the loser of Cairn University and host Muhlenberg College's Friday night game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
